CASA DE LIBERACE The Liberace estate in Palm Springs was his favorite home, as he frequently came here for his “R” & “R” when not on tour. He even chose to spend the last two years of his life in its splendid, but warm and cozy surroundings. Here he passed away in 1987. The estate was originally constructed in 1924 as a bed and breakfast retreat and was known as “The Cloisters.” After various uses, Liberace purchased it in 1968 and devoted many years of his time and fortune to make it a unique living experience, stocking it with elegant and rare furnishings, tapestries, rugs, priceless art objects, sculptures and a myriad array of pictures and art objects from all over the world. Liberace not only was elegant and flamboyant in his musical performances, he also expressed his unique flair at home, where he received a multitude of internationally famous people from the social, entertainment and political fields as house guests. The women guests stayed in the beautiful Gloria Vanderbilt bedroom designed by his Mother. The men guests slept in the ponderous brass bed of the chandeliered Rudolph Valentino bedroom. Lavish furnishings from the Hearst Castle grace the living room and garden room. |
